Tankcontainer für organische Peroxide

Source: BAM

The following containers fall under the category "Tanks and Containers":
- tank containers/portable tanks according to the RID/ADR/IMDG-Code
- tanks made of fibre-reinforced plastics
- vacuum operated waste tanks
- BK-bulk cargo containers
- mobile explosive manufacturing units
- multiple element gas containers

Tanks and containers, in most cases, have to be approved by the competent authority or an approved monitoring body. In Germany, the BAM is responsible for the individual types of containers. Other responsibilities lie with the federal state authorities for dangerous goods or approved monitoring bodies.

1. Researching for safety

We can make a significant contribution to improving tank technology by thermal and mechanical research, the simulation of accident scenarios. In fire tests we examine, for example, test materials that are supposed to prevent a tank from exploding before the first emergency measures take effect.

Such large-scale tests are possible at the BAM test area BAM Test Site Technical Safety (German only).

The variety in the types and forms of corrosion that can appear on construction materials results in very different kinds of damage with a very wide range of potential dangers.

Within the framework of material evaluation we research, amongst other things, questions about the corrosion resistance of materials.

2. Hazardous goods storage and risk management

In addition, our range of responsibilities includes both the evaluation and suitability appraisal of storage tanks, household tanks, leakage protection linings, fire protection measures for liquid gas containers, and the investigation of safety requirements at refilling stations.

The number of accidents will probably also be influenced by growing transport services and increasing transit traffic.
We, therefore, develop safety-related concepts for a risk-based development of regulations for the transport of dangerous goods.

3. Approval

We are also responsible for granting approvals for tank containers, mobile tanks, mixed cargo units and BK-bulk cargo containers.

Another focus is providing consultation and information on dangerous goods legal regulations for transport tanks, including mechanical handling techniques.
